Practical training is indispensable for acquiring competencies. Achieving a broad range of diagnostic competencies can be difficult in a real-world environment. Purchasing the latest vehicles is expensive, and setting up faults in a car is time consuming, not to mention the risk of damage. The solution? Auto Diagnostic Trainer ADT2500.

Automotive Engine Simulator

The ADT2500 is a virtual automobile with the ability to introduce faults. The virtual car includes a true simulation of a functional engine, accessible by an interactive user interface. The software creates a realistic 'look and feel', similar to what a student will experience in a shop, without the risk of injury from heat, and moving parts. Available faults, are ranked by three levels of difficulty. The teacher can monitor and review every diagnostic step the student takes through the Learning Management System (LMS).

ADT2500 consists of two parts: the Virtual Engine Simulator and the Learning Management System (LMS). The instructor uses the LMS to manage the training of each student. He can assess the completed sessions by student and comment on the diagnostic procedures employed by each individual.

When the student logs on to the program, the virtual engine will introduce a fault, which sometimes can be recognized by the sound of the engine, and most certainly can be identified by using the virtual tools provided. The malfunction can be either mechanical or electrical. Wiring diagrams, specifications and component layouts are provided for the student’s reference. To diagnose the malfunction and possibly repair it, all necessary tools are included:

  • Operational Tools
    • Dis/Assemble
    • Cut
    • Tap
    • Listen
    • Clean
    • Push
    • Fill Up
    • Replace
  • Mechanical Tools
    • Compression Meter
    • Fuel Pressure Gauge
    • Fuel Filter
    • Spark Plug Tester
    • Jumper Cables
  • Electrical Tools
    • Functional Dashboard
    • Accelerator Pedal
    • Multi-meter
    • LED Tester
    • Conductivity Tester
    • Patch Cables
    • Diagnosis Guide

Upon completing a session, the student has the opportunity to comment on his own performance. Did he solved the problem? Does a component have to be replaced and how did he come to this conclusion? This information is added to his performance overview, the activities are added to a log file, and can be discussed later with the instructor.

How does the simulation work?

How can software replace practical training on a real car? The ADT2500 has been developed with detailed mathematical models that simulate the electronic network and the engine behavior in real-time. .

Specific data, such as the intake manifold air flow, mixture composition and ignition timing are used to calculate the engine torque, the engine temperature and exhaust gas composition. The behavior of the electronic control unit, actuators and sensors are simulated faithfully to real-world components. Almost all characteristics and parameters can be changed to simulate and demonstrate every possible malfunction. During the troubleshooting process, sound plays an important role. The engine sound is very realistic and is generated based on engine speed and torque. Also other simulated sounds are useful in diagnosis such as backfires, relays, the fan, the fuel pump and air leakage.

Advantages of ADT2500

  • Cost Effective - especially compared to numerous vehicles in a school shop
  • Time Efficient - less time required for the instructor to configure or demonstrate faults
  • Extensive Fault List to expand student diagnostic experience.
  • No risk of damage to real components.
  • Excellent assessment of student competence, via the Learning Management System
  • Bottom Line: The ADT2500 is an excellent classroom demonstrator for instructors, and as a student workstation will monitor and test students as they master relevant competencies.
